Beyond The Wall by thefreshdoodle Beyond The Wall by thefreshdoodle
"The Cold Winds are Rising"

I've been a huge fan of Game of Thrones and I don't know why it took so long for me to contribute to it's large gallery of fan arts. I believe that Jon Snow may be the most popular character(in terms of fan arts) as I've seen hundreds already online. So why did I choose to draw him? Other than he's got an awesome role but it's that part of the story where the Night's Watch go beyond the wall to look for their missing friends and the WHITE WALKERS. Yep, I'm not really fan of the dragons part as I've seen so many dragon stories and these white walkers are simply unique and different. Oh before I forget, that's his wolf Ghost, this season he is much bigger and so are the other Stark wolves.

"Winter is coming..."

It's only the beginning of Season 2 and expect more Game of Thrones fan art from me. ^_^

I love this painting. The colors really work together. I feel cold just looking at this, because the weather is easily conveyed through these warm grays. The Pollock-style paint splatters and blotches really help out with the atmosphere, although in this setting it seems a little bit overused. The right and left-facing L composition really pays focus to the subject in this painting. I also really like the cool grays seeping into the subject's face. I just wish you made the flesh a little bit warmer, becuase you lose the human with those cooler colors. I also feel the same about the wolf. A lighter gray would have really helped "push" it forward. A last note on the composition - put your signature a little bit to the left. It interferes with the painting.

This is quite possibly the most amazing piece of Game of Thrones fan art I have ever seen! I might be a little biased because Jon is my favourite character, and you are one of my favourite artists, but this just takes my breath away. I have never felt so compelled to buy a piece of art on first sight, but this baby is going straight on my wall.
As for some CC:
I love the composition of this piece particularly; firstly, you've used one of my favourite reference pictures for Jon, but the placement of Ghost is great. I personally don't usually like the effect of "floating heads" but this works fantastically.
The colour scheme works very well, and like someone else said, I can feel the cold just by looking at it. I think it's personal preference, but I disagree with xjm's comments on the colours being warmer. I think the colours you've used for Jon's face and Ghost's fur really helps to capture and enhance the bitter cold and strenuous job of guarding the Wall and being part of the Night's Watch. I think losing the human touch is perfect; as I would imagine it to actually be. The only thing I will say about the colours is that Ghost's eyes should be blood red, and I think the shading on the ears is a little too dark as it looks like the fur is black, and Ghost is completely white.
Your unique style of combining the rough, scratchy pen marks with reasonably flat colours and the paint splatters has always appealed to me, but I think it works extremely well in this piece. However, I do think that it may be a little overused on the face, as I find it a little distracting, but not enough that it bothers me.
I haven't really given you much criticism, but it's hard to fault this piece. Easily one of the best you've done in my opinion and I cannot wait to own a copy!

I was looking at the critique from xjm, but he has been banned permanently so it does not count anymore :-) I like everything here on this piece. It is engaging, the texture gives the feel of outdoors and the roughness of the period. Jon too is one of my favorites. I think your name is in the proper place, it is part of the painting. Jon's skin color is perfect, composition wise, you move to him first then to the wolf. That is the way it should be. There is only one little tiny place I would correct and that would be the wolfs eye. I would do some ink shadow scratches on the upper iris so the eyeball itself would recede into his eye socket. That is being picky but it is all about making ourselves better artists. Great job.

hahaha, don't worry xjm sucks anyways. see what I love about most people who criticize my work, is that majority of them can't even produce half the quality of my work. they pretty much suck at it so they just try to prove their aesthetic knowledge by criticizing someone else' work. lol real talk. i completely agree with your comments and suggestions, you are a pretty good traditional painter yourself. =)
